In that period, the land was increasingly concentrated in the hands of the largest landowners while increasing numbers of the snail and aiddle fanners were pauperized. The Sandinist Government has prepared and implemented an agrarian reform to solve these problems. The agrarian reform expropriates mainly the land lying fallow, rented land, land without intensive exploitation. Suek land is allotted, first of all, to various types of agricultural co-operatives. Hence, co-operatives make a significant contribution to the cultivation of the land that has been unexploited.
