DEVELOPMENT OF CATTLE BREEDING AND MILK PRODUCTION IN CUBA

Breeding work, investment of capital, development
of veterinary service and other measures taken in cattle breeding in Cuba have
led to an increase in the performance of cows and In the output of milk over
the past three decades. Sixty-three percent of the total stock of cows, counted
in 1985, were of the dairy type. The average milk yield of the dairy-type cows
was 2372 kg; of this, cows of the Ho late in breed had a performance of 3969
kg. The total amount of milk sold by the farms in 1985 was 766 600 tonnes, which
is 258 % more than in 1970. Over the period from 1970 to 1985, milk output increased
by 145 % in the state sector; this was due to increased milk yields (+86 %)
and to increased number of cows that were milked (+35 %). The state sector keeps
75 % of the cattle. Milk sales increased by 258 % over 1970-1985. The state
and co-operative sectors, taken together, contribute 98 % to the total selling
of milk.
