LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION IN THE LEAST DEVELOPED COUNTRIES

Summary
Official FAQ data for 1975 and 1985 are evaluated,
concerning the total numbers of population, numbers of persons engaged in agriculture,
and numbers and production of faro animals in 37 least developed countries,
identified by the UN General Assembly in 1986. Over the 1975-1985 decade the
total numbers of population augmented whereas the percentage of economically
active persons engaged in farming declined by 5.1 %. The stocks of cattle and
buffaloes and the numbers of poultry increased and the stocks of the remaining
farm animals fell* The output of meat and of sheep and goat milk was somewhat
higher and the output of cow and buffalo milk decreased. A substantial increase
was recorded in the production of hen eggs. As shown by comparison of the least
developed countries with all developing countries for 1985, the numbers of cattle
buffaloes, the numbers of sheep and goats, the output of beef and mutton and
output of sheep and goat milk were higher in the least developed countries whereas
the numbers of pigs and poultry and the outputs of pork, beef, cow+buffalo milk
and hen eggs were higher in developing countries taken as a whole.
