SUMARY REPORT ON CROSSBREEDING OF WEST AFRICAN FOREST SHEEP WITH BLACK HEADED PERSIAN RAMS IN GHANA

I. Šáda, F. Vohradský

Summary
A new meat type sheep was developed in Ghana by crossing the local Forest Type breed with imported Black Headed Persian rams during the years 1956 to 1970. The crossbreds showed an improvement of body frame, growth intensity, live and slaughter weight as well as of carcass and cut-out value when compared with, the local breed. At the same time, however, this crossbreding system had an unfavourable effect on fertility of ewes as the natality in crossbreds dropped below 100%, For the extensive rearing and the tropical climatic conditions of Accra Plains, this crossbreeding system proved as convenient, although other local and improving breeds should also be considered.
