ON SOME ECONOMIC ISSUES OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURE IN ETHIOPIA
FILATE BELACHEW BABORE, JIØÍ HAVEL
Abstract
Ethiopia is among the developing countries that have
to face critical issues of economic development. As agriculture is a key sector
of the national economy and is responsible for providing food to feed the nation,
the serious issues of agricultural development have to be treated with highest
priority. Analysis of post-revolution economic development suggests that it
is essential to consolidate functioning market relationships in the rural areas
of the country and introduce effective incentives which would encourage farmers
to increase production. This strategy will require efforts to develop strong
commodity-money relationships which can be considered as the key factors responsible
for intensifying all activities throughout the agricultural sectorf for increasing
both the output of special export commodities and the production of basic foodstuffsf
and for reducing the dependence of the country on food imports.
