Abstract
Trials were conducted in Prague (50°NL, 15"EL)
to study the effect of sowing rates on the production parameters of the "K343"
amaranth (material donated by Prof. Aufhammer of the University of Hohenheim).
No significant differences in the leaf area index (LAI) were recorded between
stands sown at rates of 16 and 65 plants per 1 m2: at the former sowing rate
the LAI was 3.6 m2.m-2, at the latter it was 3.2 m2.m-2. Of course, there were
considerable differences in the number and size of the leaves. LAI compensation
by ampler branching was observedatthe lower spacing. Increased branching in
the thin stand also influenced the leaves' and stems' proportions of the total
dry matter and, thereby, the over-all distribution of dry matter into the different
organs during the growing season.
