Abstract
A metabolic trial was conducted on ROSS broiler male
chicks to study the effect of stepwise replacement of maize by tapioca, on ME
levels in grower and finisher diets. The diets were isocaloric and isonitrogenous,
containing about the same levels of amino acids. In the grower diets each 10
% of tapioca reduced ME level by 0.17 MJ per kg. In the finisher diet the respective
reduction was by 0.09 MJ per kg. When tapioca is used in broiler feeding, the
actual ME level of the tapioca is probably lower than the table value obtained
by calculation from nutrient contents.
