WOOL PRODUCTION IN THE HUACAYA ALPACAS KEPT IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Abstract
In the first stage the investigation was focused on
the laboratory determination of wool fineness, wool yield, grease content in
wool and the quantity of wool obtained from the alpacas kept in the Zoo Park
of Usti nad Labem (Czech Republic). The average fineness of the wool was 27.7
micrometers in the males and 29.2 micrometers in the females. The males had
0.55% grease in their skin, on an average, and the females 0.51%. Both the males
and females had much dirt of plant origin in their wool: males 19.75% on an
average, females 20.63%.
The total skin yield was 74.50% in the males and 73.30% in the females. The
average amount skin obtained from one animal was 5 kg.
