Abstract
The paper contains the results of the investigation
and evaluation of the factors affecting the growth of the lambs of the mutton
Charollais breed introduced in the Czech Republic. The investigation was conducted
in operating conditions. As it is believed that the French mutton breed Charollais
is a suitable sheep breed to be kept in the countries of the Near East, we interpreted
the results with a view to the possibilities of using the findings for comparisons
with similar results which may be obta ined in the Near East.
The average birth weight of the lambs was 3.737 kg and the respective live weights
at an age of 30,60,70,100 and 130 days were 11.393 kg, 17.206 kg, 21.015 kg,
31.276 kg and 39.139 kg. The birth weight of the lambs varied significantly
with the lambs' sex (p < 0.01). The newborn ram-lambs were 17.6% heavier
than the newborn ewe-lambs. Body weights and average daily gains at an age of
30, 60, 70 and 100 days were found to be significantly dependent on litter size.
Regression to body weight at birth was significant only in the case of body
weight at an age of 100 and 130 days.
