FIELD EVALUATION OF SORGHUM VARIETIES TO SORGHUM SHOOT FLY, Atherigona soccata, RONDANI (DIPTERA: MUSCIDAE) IN EASTERN ETHIOPIA
SILESHI GUDETA
Abstract
A total of 99 sorghum entries were screened for field
resistance to the sorghum shoot fly, Atherigona soccata Rondani, using the Augmented
nursery design in two main crop seasons. Fifteen genotypes were consistently
non-prefered for oviposition, 54 showed antibiosis and 23 had recovery resistance.
Two local selections possessed the combined merits of antixenosis and antibiosis
resistance, while two others possessed antibiosis and tolerance to the shoot
fly. Under the agrocli-matic conditions o f Alemaya, Eastern Ethiopia, the resistant
ICRISAT varieties showed very high levels of antibiosis, while the susceptible
varieties had recovery resistance to shoot fly attack.
