RATITE FARMING AND THE EUROPIAN CONVENTION ON THE PROTECTION OF ANIMAL KEPT FOR FARMING PURPOSES

Abstract
In the Czech Republic, there the breeding of ratites for farm purposes has not a long lasting tradition. It started in the late 90th every time on small scale with flocks not exeeding 5 -6 females and one male. For the commencement of ratites farming, fertile eggs were imported from the RSA and Germany namely. As to species, ostrich (Struthio camelus) is kept especialy, only in a few cases rheas (Rhea americana) and emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) are farmed.
