Abstract
The breeding of antelopes in zoo’s in the Czech republic
has a long tradition. However, till now, there is no antelope breeding by farming
system in the Czech republic as it is the case in many other countries, mainly
in southern Africa. Team of the Institute of tropical and subtropical agriculture
of Czech University of Agriculture in Prague (IATS CUA) created in 2002 an experimental
farm for Common eland breeding in Brezová (Central Bohemia District).
A group of 5 specimen (1,4) of Common eland (Taurotragus oryx), stabled on the
farm BIOTOP Šidlov (North Bohemia District), was transported for this purpose
(5/09/2002). A special trailer for animal transport was used. The operation
of immobilization consisted in administration of special drugs: first, the tranquillizer
Xylazin hydrochloride and then Imobilon (Etorphin hydrochloride) were used.
Samples of blood were taken for the purpose of veterinarian examination. Afterwards,
the basic measures of animal body were taken and long – acting tranquillizer
Trilafon Enanthate and antibiotics Norostrep as the preventive medication were
given to animals. Revivon was used for awaking them. The animals were transported
in full consciousness, separetely male and females. The transportation passed
succesfully without any problem.
